School of Personal Growth

…or why should a company invest in personal growth for its employees…

Google gave the answer yet to this question and has – for a couple of years now – implemented the School of Personal Growth. This is a School within Google University (!), that consists of 4 Schools: the School of Leadership Development, the School of Workplace Essentials, the School of Google Life and Culture and the School of Personal Growth.

I think this is an example of innovative marketing, leveraging usual HR programs for employee orientation and skill development into an “academic” level with the employee herself in the middle!

According to Monika Broecker, Co-founder of the school:

“The School of Personal Growth was an offering by Google to help its employees “grow as people,” offering courses such as “The Neuroscience of Empathy” and “Search Inside Yourself.”

It is worth reading the whole interview Monika Braecker gave to Big Think – Read the whole interview here

Wellbeing week

wellbeing_week

Found on my desk in the morning when entered the office: Green tea, an apple and a cereal bar! Live well – find your balance!

A very nice initiative worth sharing, nice idea for companies or families or in a personal basis! A very simple concept but so radical…To get a break for a head & shoulders massage, in the office, within working hours and your boss fully aware 🙂 Or to step into a transformed meeting room where chairs are in a semi-circle, group therapy layout to meet colleagues and a specialist and discuss your parental role!

This is an internal initiative by our company – called the Wellbeing Week! –  happening worldwide, with the objective to remind each one of us that no matter what we do, we have to take care of our wellbeing, live well and keep our balance! Healthy lifestyles, physical activity, emotional wellbeing, healthy eating and more are some of the nice activities planned for each day of the Wellbeing Week!

We should not forget that its our internal feelings being projected into our children and if we don’t feel good or be in a bad shape, they won’t either! If we don’t have a high self-esteem, how can we show them the way to build their own?

It takes small things and it is a mentality thing after all!

#Publishmypoem_challenge

Personal expression…scoring high in the list of things you “sacrifice” in the rush of life. And like a volcano, it comes the day when emotions leak out, inspiration blows your mind and you start writing prose, poems, inspired posts or you paint, you start a blog etc.

A good friend and colleague of mine, Stella, mother of two little sweethearts, shared with me and the visitors of the blog, one of her poems. It goes untitled, as she prefers:

Ψάχνοντας λίγο νερό
-νε”ρ”ό όπως έ”ρ”ωτας-
“Δρόσισε τις πληγές σου”,
μου φώναζε μια μουσική.
Έσκυψα από πάνω
και σηκώθηκα κάποιες δεκαετίες γηραιότερη. Τώρα έχω δυο μικρές γροθιές,
μια πονεμένη πλάτη
και ένα παράθυρο
που βγάζει στον ακάλυπτο.

Very powerful symbolism, narrating a whole life in a few lines with a touch of down-to-earth optimism.

Didn’t know that side of you Stella, although I should have guessed it… Very honored you shared it here…Things that matter, indeed!

Like this, I open the #publishmypoem_challenge! Irene, you are next! Dare it!

First mammography!

Last week I had my first mammography. It was a high quality digital mammography according to latest standards, followed by an ultrasound performed with a high resolution device by a specialized radiologist. No findings at all, as expected. The purpose of this examination was to serve as a reference for future ones! It is advised that women after 35 – and certainly before 40 years of age – have a reference digital mammography. This way we know exactly how our own breasts look like when healthy, so that any deviation is easily noticed and as soon as possible!

It is common sense nowadays that prevention and early diagnosis play an important role in almost any disease – with breast cancer being among the first in that list. Before starting to work in the pharmaceutical industry and be exposed to a whole new field of information, I had a totally different perception of diseases like cancer and a different attitude towards preventive activities – although I’ve always been paying attention to unusual symptoms. To be informed and aware is a mentality we should all cultivate. This is the least we can do for ourselves. And it is extremely painful to me to admit that I haven’t been very assertive to this direction with some beloved ones I’ve lost… 🙁

So… my dear lady friends! Have you planned yours?

A crocodile at school

first_day_at_school

Three-year-old Anastasis going to school for the first time!

Mommy was definitely very excited, daddy very proud. Our young school boy finally heading smiling towards the kindergarten, anxious to verify himself all the incredible things that happen there…

We have been preparing Anastasis for a long time now, discussing what school looks like, what is the purpose of going, what one should & shouldn’t do and many stories from our own experiences. We have risen high expectations, which remain to be proved true…In his mind, I think, kindergarten is similar to a playroom one goes to have endless fun. In our minds, it is more like rules and a daily routine that needs to be streamlined. Truth is probably somewhere in the middle…

First day was actually very easy going. He left smiling, wondering though why his teacher didn’t teach them the letters 🙂

A wooden rustic mirror

If I had more free time, I would spent it in DIY wooden furniture! Raw wood is so natural, simple yet elegant and stylish, if you combine it properly. Looking around in the web, there are hundreds of ideas on how to transform an ordinary, useless piece of wood into a piece of art or even everyday use easily and with low cost!

“Brainwashed – Seven ways to reinvent yourself” by Seth Godin

I accidentally ran into it some years ago and found it again yesterday when I decided to clean up my computer. Clean up interrupted!

It is one of these texts that once you start reading, you just can’t stop. Every sentence is full of meaning, compact messages that challenge your thinking… “Brainwashed?”… could be! “Reinvent yourself”…how I’d like that! “7 ways”…wow, is that really possible?

Seth Godin is a bestselling author, entrepreneur and agent of change. Godin is author of multiple books that have been bestsellers around the world and changed the way people think about marketing, change and work.

Click here to read “Brainwashed” – No matter what you’ll make out of it, you’ll definitely go along a journey of retrospection!

It is also worth having a look on how wikipedia describes Seth

I’ll be glad to open up a dialogue on this – what do you think of it?

A nice article about engaging visitors in your website!

Lead magnet concept exemplified by Brainstorm Digital

Lead magnet concept exemplified by Brainstorm Digital

Anyone how owns a website should agree that the hardest thing of all is to keep an online “customer” engaged, so that he’ll be back again and again. We are competing for our customers time, so the offering should be really worth it. You have one chance (a few seconds actually) to prove it, otherwise you probably don’t see him back again.

Here is a nice article I’ve found on Brainstorm Digital Blog posted by Miriam Shaviv – July 30, 2014 titled What every marketer needs to know about great lead-magnets explaining the lead magnet concept, while providing tangible examples! Nice food for thought!
